Today we are kicking off a brand new series! I am partnering with my good friend Laura Cochran Nay (@mzlalala), to bring you a monthly home decor series! Aka: Decor of the month, or “decor du mois” as we are dubbing it. Laura is an expert on interiors, decor, entertaining and all things surrounding making a house a home! Each month she’s going to come to us with a new topic within interior design.
I’ve been contemplating giving our powder room a little facelift, and she just renovated hers, so it seemed like the perfect place to start. Take it away Laura! :)

My powder room was my favorite thing to design in my own home! It’s like a hidden gem that surprises your guests! I didn’t feel the pressure to make it flow with the rest of my home because it remains closed off. I wanted something that was luxurious but unexpected. Here are my tips for creating the perfect powder room!
Step one: Pick a bold wallpaper!!! If you aren’t ready or able to make the plunge, go with a bold paint color such as navy or temporary wallpaper. Think about the space and whether it warrants a bigger pattern for a more open space or something more subtle in a narrow space. Feel free to express some personality with whatever you choose whether a sleek Art Deco print, glamorous metallic or elegant chinoiserie. For the over-achievers out there– tile your focal wall with a mosaic tile!! My personal favorites are by Ann Sacks. (Www.annsacks.com)
Step two: Add just the right amount of interest with a funky mirror. Think of it as art. Play with texture, pattern, color, etc. (Love this one.)
Step three: Pick light fixtures. There are many ways to hang light fixtures whether on either side, above or even on the adjacent walls. Make sure they are appropriate in size and they don’t over power the mirror. I say, “The sleeker, the better!”
Step four: Get your vanity. With a bold wallpaper and funky mirror, the vanity should be simple. A simple white pedestal or gorgeous floating Carrera marble top are sleek and easy to pair with renovations in the future. Keep in mind that powder rooms don’t require as much storage, so you can opt for a more modern vanity with no drawers.
Step five: Accessorize! A fresh bouquet of flowers, monogrammed hand towel, luxurious soaps and a candle with matches are all you need to finalize the space! Its these little touches that make your guests feel right at home!

Thank you Laura! I’m planning to pick out a fun wallpaper and new mirror. A new vanity is a bit more of an undertaking, so we’ll see! If you aren’t looking to do a full renovation consider a few fun changes like this:
- Grab this amazing monogrammed soap for only $11. (As opposed to $40 here.)
- or this monogrammed towel for only $12
- Maybe some inexpensive temporary wallpaper? Thanks Target. :)
- Laura recommends this soap, or this fancy soap or this extra fancy lavender hand wash, or this Kiehl’s hand wash.
- These Jonathan Adler accessories are fabulous.
- Target is killing it with these chic/simple towels.
- This soap rock is chic.
- These jars are fab.
- Single initial personalized soap for $17 here. Love that these are square!
- When all else fails – grab some flowers from the great outdoors, and put them in a pretty vase. Free, and adds a special little touch.
And PS – if you’re wondering how Laura’s fabulous powder room turned out … it is gorgeous!!
… and here it is all decorated for Christmas!! So pretty!
